Five Dashboard Warning Lights You Should Know

Engines consist of thousands of individual components, all working together to power your vehicle efficiently and transport you safely. If even a single part isn’t in working condition, it can cause a massive number of issues throughout your vehicle. When there’s a problem with your vehicle, your dashboard will alert you and display a warning light based on the issue. Here are five dashboard warning lights you should know.

Check Engine Light (CEL)

Engines consist of thousands of individual components that work together to efficiently power your vehicle. If a single part isn’t functioning correctly, it can cause a load of issues throughout your vehicle. Generally, the vehicle’s check engine light turns on to provide a more specific idea of where the problem is located. Unfortunately, this won’t be an exact estimate; further diagnostics are required to narrow down the source of the issues to determine if repairs are needed.

If your vehicle’s check engine light is flashing or blinking, this is a sign of more serious damage and should be taken to a shop immediately

Battery Light

If you see a glowing red battery on your dashboard, it means you’re currently running your car on the battery alone. When the engine isn’t on, the alternator isn’t actively charging the battery. This will eventually drain the battery. If this light is on while your car’s engine is on, it’s typically a sign that the battery charging system isn’t working properly.

Oil Pressure Light

If you see the oil pressure light appear on your dashboard, there’s a problem with your engine oil pressure. Without the right amount of oil pressure, the engine can’t properly lubricate itself. This can lead to major mechanical problems—the engine could break down, leaving you stranded. It’s best to get this checked out right away.

TPMS Light

The primary function of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is to alert you when tire pressure is too low, creating dangerous driving conditions. If the TPMS light is illuminated on your dashboard, your tires could be underinflated, which can lead to possible tire failure. Both overinflation and underinflation can cause premature tire wear and, possibly, tire failure.

Brake Light

If you see your brake light warning light on your dashboard. There may be a problem with your vehicle’s brake system. The system may require one of the brake system components to be repaired, or the hydraulic fluid may need a top-off. Stop the car and call a tow truck as soon as you can without endangering yourself or others on the road. Driving without a fully functioning brake system is dangerous and should be fixed as soon as possible.
