Winter Driving Checklist

As winter arrives and the temperatures drop, we like to remind drivers of the importance of winter preparation for their vehicles. While the cold of winter can be hard on us, it can be just as hard on the vehicles we rely on.

In this article, we’ll go over some of the most important boxes to check on your vehicle before the snowfall gets too heavy, why they’re important, and how to ensure your ride is ready for anything you throw at it this winter season.

What to Check on Your Vehicle This Winter

Tires

Maybe the most obvious on this list, but the importance of tires that can properly handle the low-traction of snowy and icy roads cannot be understated.

We recommend choosing a set of winter-specific tires to have installed on your vehicle for the season, but if you do decide to stick with all-season options, you should ensure the tires are in good enough condition to safely traverse inclement weather.

The most important part of your tires to check is the tread, which is what’s responsible for creating traction between your vehicle and the road. If the tread is visibly worn down on any portion of the vehicle, it’s likely not too safe for you to be driving on.

Pressure also plays an important role, and tires should be topped off to factory specifications. The idea that lower pressures will increase traction is a common misconception, but in fact, it only makes driving through snow less safe. Underinflated tires have decreased handling and control while putting excess strain on the sidewalls.

Finally, you should always ensure you have a spare ready to go. It’s a worst-case scenario no doubt, but being left without a spare can make a bad situation much worse.

Battery

Cold weather is notoriously hard on automotive batteries, as the low temperatures slow down the chemical reaction used to produce electricity. Weak batteries often have a difficult time starting the vehicle in the winter and could leave you stranded.

Having your battery’s charge tested by a local mechanic is the best way to avoid this, as they will be able to warn you if your battery is nearing depletion. You can also help ensure the best electrical connection possible by removing corrosion and debris from the positive and negative terminals.

Wiper Blades

While it may not seem like a pressing issue up front, old or damaged wiper blades can significantly reduce your visibility in inclement weather.

So before the snow starts falling hard, you should check that your blades are free of tears, cracking, or other damage. If you notice an issue, you should have them replaced soon to avoid being stuck driving in the rain or snow without proper visibility. New wiper blades and installation are generally very inexpensive, especially considering their importance to your safety.

Lights

Heavy snowfall can reduce the visible distance between you and objects or other vehicles considerably, making lights like headlights, fog lights, brake lights, and turn signals crucial to both you and the drivers around you. In some instances of thick fog or snowfall, they may be the only part of your vehicle other drivers can see before it’s too late.

The best way to ensure they’re all in working condition is to take a quick walk around the vehicle. Flip on all the necessary lights and take a look to see if they’re illuminated. Checking the brake lights may require the help of a friend who can push the pedal as you check.

Defroster

The defroster is vital to clearing condensation and fog from your windshield, which can quickly accumulate and cause visibility issues. Your A/C system needs to be in working condition in order for your defrosters to be effective.

You should check that your defroster is in working condition to avoid losing visibility to condensation buildup while driving.
